What is QAM coding?
Quadrature-amplitude-modulation (QAM) codes are used in microwave digital radio for transmission with enhanced spectral efficiency over limited channel bandwidths. An outline diagram of a transmitter with such modulation is shown in Fig. 17.3, while Fig. 17.4 outlines the receiver segments.

How many bits is 64-QAM?
Each symbol in 64-QAM is a constellation state that contains six bits and each symbol is one possible combination out of 64 different states ranging from 000 000 to 111 111. Since, this modulation scheme uses binary data, the total number of possible combinations using 6 bits is 26 i.e. 64.
How many bits can 1024 QAM represent?
With 1024 QAM modulation, there are more bits per symbol — 10 bits per symbol versus 8 bits in 256 QAM.
