Do yellow jackets have a hive?
Yellowjacket Hives Have a Wide Variety of Locations
Yellowjackets make their hives in the ground, the western and eastern varieties both do this. They can even use mouse burrows, expanding them as their colony grows. They will use any soil cavity they can find, but not all species go just for ground dwellings.
How many yellow jackets are in a hive?
A colony of yellow jackets only forages about a mile from home to gather their food, so if you are seeing them frequently, odds are you're close to their colony, or nest. Nests have populations of 2,000 to 4,000 worker yellow jackets (all female), some drone (male) yellow jackets and up to 50 queens at once!
Do yellow jackets live in a hive or a nest?
Yellowjackets live in hives. Yellowjackets regularly build their hives underground in rodent burrows. If you see flying insects appearing from the ground, it is likely a yellowjacket swarm. By late summer, a colony may comprise thousands of aggressive yellowjackets that will defend their nests by attacking.
