What is a delay line?

noun. electronics. : a device put in series with a transmission line to introduce a time lag in signals traversing it.

How does a delay line work?

When a delay line is used as a memory device, an amplifier and a pulse shaper are connected between the output of the delay line and the input. These devices recirculate the signals from the output back into the input, creating a loop that maintains the signal as long as power is applied.

Why is a delay line used in a?

A delay line is placed between output of vertical amplifier and y input of cathode ray tube, to delay incoming unknown signal. Purpose of delay line is to synchronize unknown signal with sweep signal such that complete signal portion will be displayed without any loss.

Where are delay lines located?

Although delay lines as storage devices have been superseded by more cost-effective components they are still to be found in almost all computer motherboards, where they are used to equalize the delay between signals in parallel busses, as found with most microprocessors operating at 100 MHz or more.
