Field of view (FOV) is the open, observable area a person can see through their eyes or via an optical device, such as a camera.
Why is field of view important in photography?
Well, in terms of photography it describes the amount of scene captured by the camera. This is important because to some extent it determines what we can see in a photo. A camera with a very small FOV will only capture a small part of the total scene, so we won't get to see much.
What is a good field of view for a camera?
Standard/Medium: Lenses covering a viewing angle of 60 to 25 degrees, representing an effective focal length of 25mm to 65mm. Telephoto: Lenses that cover a viewing angle of 25 to 10 degrees, which corresponds to a focal length of 65mm to 160mm.
