Should light be in front or behind?
Natural light is almost always better than artificial light. (Artificial light comes in a lot of different color temperatures that aren't noticeable to your eye, but look wonky on camera.) Make sure the light source is in front of you, not behind you, so you don't get accidentally silhouetted.
Where should webcam lights be placed?
Light from in front, not behind
Webcams automatically record and adjust to the brightest source of light. And if that light is behind you, you're no longer the focus. Avoid being backlit by making sure you're facing toward, not away from, a window or another light source.
Should you face a window for video calls?
Don't sit in front of a window: Yes, it's probably a great source of light but if the window is behind you, you're likely to be in complete shadow. Think about the background: For video calls, a neutral background is best – try to avoid visual clutter that you might get lost in.
How do I deal with the bright window on my camera?
To get a bright, well-lit image, set your camera to Aperture Priority first. Then, point your camera at an area of the interior that is away from the windows or any other source of lighting. Notice and remember the shutter speed the camera shows you.
