What is a wavelength filter?

Wavelength-filtered signal: The intensity of the emitted light recorded from a point or region of the sample exposed to the electron beam of the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The signal is limited to a small range of (user-defined) wavelengths; no angle or polarization information is contained.

How can I tell if someone is using filters on their photos?

Look for poor editing first. Glaring blunders must be the first method you identify a doctored picture. A useful idea is to look around the area you think is edited if you believe something's been customized. Buckling around a topic is a pretty clear indication of picture manipulation.

Are filters cheating in photography?

No, using filters are not cheating. Even in the days of film, everyone used some sort of “filter.” For example, camera film is some sort of “filter.” Different films gave a photograph different looks or aesthetics.
