Why use Tikhonov regularization?

Also known as Tikhonov regularization, named for Andrey Tikhonov, it is a method of regularization of ill-posed problems. It is particularly useful to mitigate the problem of multicollinearity in linear regression, which commonly occurs in models with large numbers of parameters.

Why do we use regularised least squares?

RLS allows the introduction of further constraints that uniquely determine the solution. The second reason for using RLS arises when the learned model suffers from poor generalization. RLS can be used in such cases to improve the generalizability of the model by constraining it at training time.

What is discrete Picard condition?

Definition: Discrete Picard Condition. The vector f∈Rm satisfies the discrete Picard condition for the problem Ku=f if the coefficients |⟨ui,f⟩| decay faster than the singular values σi of K, where ui denotes the left singular vectors of K.

What is the least squares solution?

So a least-squares solution minimizes the sum of the squares of the differences between the entries of A K x and b . In other words, a least-squares solution solves the equation Ax = b as closely as possible, in the sense that the sum of the squares of the difference b − Ax is minimized.
