What would you use a Tikhonov regularization for?

Also known as Tikhonov regularization, named for Andrey Tikhonov, it is a method of regularization of ill-posed problems. It is particularly useful to mitigate the problem of multicollinearity in linear regression, which commonly occurs in models with large numbers of parameters.

Why do we use regularised least squares?

RLS allows the introduction of further constraints that uniquely determine the solution. The second reason for using RLS arises when the learned model suffers from poor generalization. RLS can be used in such cases to improve the generalizability of the model by constraining it at training time.

What is penalized least squares?

A penalized least squares estimate is a surface that minimizes the penalized least squares over the class of all surfaces satisfying sufficient regularity conditions. Define xi as a d-dimensional covariate vector, zi as a p-dimensional covariate vector, and yi as the observation associated with (xi, zi).

What is the least squares solution?

So a least-squares solution minimizes the sum of the squares of the differences between the entries of A K x and b . In other words, a least-squares solution solves the equation Ax = b as closely as possible, in the sense that the sum of the squares of the difference b − Ax is minimized.
