Surface emg vs needle emg

Surface emg vs needle emg

Needle EMG is an electrodiagnostic medicine technique commonly used by neurologists. Surface EMG is a non-medical procedure used to assess muscle activation by several professionals, including physiotherapists, kinesiologists and biomedical engineers.

  1. What are the two types of EMG?
  2. How needle electrodes are different from surface electrodes?
  3. What is Surface EMG used for?
  4. Is Surface EMG accurate?

What are the two types of EMG?

Two kinds of EMG signals in widespread use include surface EMG, and intramuscular (needle and fine-wire) EMG. To perform intramuscular EMG, a needle electrode or a needle containing two fine-wire electrodes is placed within the muscle of interest (invasive electrode).

How needle electrodes are different from surface electrodes?

Needle electrodes or intramuscular wire electrodes are favored over surface electrodes because they can enter the individual motor units straightaway and evaluate the coming action potentials more precisely. The most widely employed needle electrode is the concentric ring needle with a monopolar single electrode.

What is Surface EMG used for?

Surface EMG can be used in monitoring neuromuscular pathologies, in prevention of work-related disorders and occupational therapy, and in monitoring neuromuscular changes/progress in acute patients (see section Surface EMG Applications).

Is Surface EMG accurate?

Main results: The average accuracy of successful decomposition among the 119 MUs that were common to both intramuscular and surface records was approximately 95%, and the accuracy was comparable between the different segments of the sEMG signals (i.e., force ramp-up versus steady state force versus combined).
