Stable and causal system

Stable and causal system

A causal system is a system where the output depends on past and current inputs but not future inputs. A system is said to be stable if every bounded input produces the bounded output. UPSC IES Marks Out with reference to the 2022 cycle.

  1. How do you know if a system is causal or stable?
  2. What is meant by causal system?
  3. When a causal LTI system is stable?
  4. What is an example of causal system?

How do you know if a system is causal or stable?

Hence, the system is causal. A system is said to invertible if the input of the system appears at the output. The system is said to be stable only when the output is bounded for bounded input. For a bounded input, if the output is unbounded in the system then it is said to be unstable.

What is meant by causal system?

A causal system is one whose output depends only on the present and the past inputs. A noncausal system's output depends on the future inputs.

When a causal LTI system is stable?

Condition for the stability of LTI system: LTI system is stable if its impulse response is absolutely summable i.e., finite. Therefore, limits of u(n) will be from 0 to ∞ and limits for δ(n) will be only 0.

What is an example of causal system?

a) y(t)=x(t)

Here, the signal is only dependent on the present values of x. For example if we substitute t = 3, the result will show for that instant of time only. Therefore, as it has no dependence on future value, we can call it a Causal system.
