Sinad measurement

SINAD measurements SINAD is defined as the ratio of the total signal (desired signal plus the sum of all distortion and noise components) to the sum of all distortion and noise components. SINAD can never be less than 1, and is always positive when expressed in dB.

How is SINAD measured?

It is the ratio of Signal+Noise+Distortion divided by Noise+Distortion, expressed in dB. SINAD is measured using the test set's Audio Analyzer. SINAD can be measured in the range of 100 Hz to 10 kHz.

What is a good SINAD measurement?

A standard value of 12 dB SINAD is often used in testing the sensitivities of receivers because this value enables all pertinent components of the receiver to contribute to receiver's sensitivity measurement [L.T. Jones]. A SINAD value of 12 dB, corresponds to a 4:1 SNR or a signal containing 25 percent distortion.

What is a good SINAD value?

This 0.25 μV value is typical for VHF commercial radio, while 0.35 μV is probably more typical for UHF. In the real world, lower SINAD values (more noise) can still result in intelligible speech, but it is tiresome work to listen to a voice in that much noise.

What is the difference between SNR and SINAD?

Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR, or sometimes called SNR-without-harmonics) is calculated from the FFT data the same as SINAD, except that the signal harmonics are excluded from the calculation, leaving only the noise terms. In practice, it is only necessary to exclude the first 5 harmonics, since they dominate.
