What is accelerometer and gyroscope sensor?

Accelerometers measure linear acceleration (specified in mV/g) along one or several axis. A gyroscope measures angular velocity (specified in mV/deg/s). If we take our accelerometer and impose a rotation to it (i.e., a roll) (Figure 8), the distances d1 and d2 will not change.

Why do we combine accelerometer and gyroscope?

In the case of gyroscopes and accelerometers, they each serve to offset the other's noise and drift errors to provide more complete and accurate movement tracking. This action of combining these sensors' outputs is realized through the implementation of the Kalman or complementary filter.
