Reduce PSD Computation without Time Information Loss

Reduce PSD Computation without Time Information Loss
  1. How do you calculate PSD?
  2. Why use Welch PSD?
  3. What does the Welch method do?
  4. What are the factors on which power spectral density of digital data depend?

How do you calculate PSD?

A PSD is computed by multiplying each frequency bin in an FFT by its complex conjugate which results in the real only spectrum of amplitude in g2.

Why use Welch PSD?

Welch's method is an improvement on the standard periodogram spectrum estimating method and on Bartlett's method, in that it reduces noise in the estimated power spectra in exchange for reducing the frequency resolution.

What does the Welch method do?

Welch's technique to reduce the variance of the periodogram breaks the time series into segments, usually overlapping. Welch's method computes a modified periodogram for each segment and then averages these estimates to produce the estimate of the power spectral density.

What are the factors on which power spectral density of digital data depend?

Estimation of PSD by Welch's method depends on three parameters, 1) window length – win, 2) percentage of window overlap – noverlap and 3) number of FFT points – N.
