What is PCM volume?

PCM is for "Pulse Code Modulation".... sound files, essentially. If you turn up Master volume, everything gets louder... headphones, CD, etc. PCM turns up the volume just for sound files, but CD volume would remain the same.

Does PCM support surround sound?

PCM can carry surround sound, but it cannot do so over an optical cable—the optical cable can only carry stereo PCM (using TOSLINK, the home stereo standard). To send surround PCM, you'd need to use an HDMI cable (or alternatively displayport on a PC), which carries both the video and audio signal.

What does 44.1 PCM mean?

It is measured in kilohertz (kHz) and is used to describe the number of times an analogue signal is sampled per second in its conversion to a digital file. For example, in a CD-quality track at 16-bit/44.1kHz, the signal is sampled 44,100 per second. In a high-res file, it could be 192,000 times per second.

What is PCM audio codec?

Audio codecs

PCM is a codec used in computers, Compact-Discs, digital phones, and the uncommonly used super-audio discs. The source signal for PCM is sampled at regular intervals and each sample represents the amplitude of the analog waveform as a digital value.
