What causes optical distortion?

Optical distortion occurs as a result of optical design, when special lens elements are used to reduce spherical and other aberrations. In short, optical distortion is a lens error. Such “perfect” lenses are very rare, since most lenses suffer from at least one kind of distortion defined below.

What is meant by distortion in optics?

In geometric optics, distortion is a deviation from rectilinear projection; a projection in which straight lines in a scene remain straight in an image. It is a form of optical aberration.

How is distortion corrected?

Most distortion correction techniques include 3 integral components: identification and registration of a fixed coordinate system (derived from a reference data set), quantification of the distortion, and a distortion correction algorithm (21).

What causes distortion in photography?

All lenses produce a certain amount of geometric lens distortion. This is caused by a range of factors, including the curve of the lens, the focal distance, and the angle at which the photo was taken.
