What is a multivibrator circuit?

A multivibrator is an electronic circuit used to implement a variety of simple two-state devices such as relaxation oscillators, timers, and flip-flops. The first multivibrator circuit, the astable multivibrator oscillator, was invented by Henri Abraham and Eugene Bloch during World War I.

How does a multivibrator circuit work?

A multivibrator circuit oscillates between a “HIGH” state and a “LOW” state producing a continuous output. Astable multivibrators generally have an even 50% duty cycle, that is that 50% of the cycle time the output is “HIGH” and the remaining 50% of the cycle time the output is “OFF”.

Which circuits are called multivibrators?

A multivibrator circuit is nothing but a switching circuit. It generates non-sinusoidal waves such as Square waves, Rectangular waves and Saw tooth waves etc. Multivibrators are used as frequency generators, frequency dividers and generators of time delays and also as memory elements in computers etc.

What are the three types of multivibrator?

The three types of multivibrators are Astable, Monostable, and Bistable. These types are differentiated based on the number of stable states, Astable has no stable states, only two quasi-stable states, and hence keeps oscillating between both levels.
