Mace debate format

The ESU Schools' Mace debating competition uses a debating format known as “Extended Mace Format”. This involves teams being made up of up to five students, three of whom will debate at a time. There are six speakers in this format: one team of three people on each side. Each speaker gives a speech of up to 7 minutes.

How do you structure a debate?

Establish the rules of the debate, including timelines. Research the topic and prepare logical arguments. Gather supporting evidence and examples for position taken. Anticipate counter arguments and prepare rebuttals.

What is the length of a debate?

The debate format is relatively simple; each team member of each side speaks for five minutes, alternating sides.
