What is known as Gibbs phenomenon?
In mathematics, the Gibbs phenomenon, discovered by Henry Wilbraham (1848) and rediscovered by J. Willard Gibbs (1899), is the oscillatory behavior of the Fourier series of a piecewise continuously differentiable periodic function around a jump discontinuity.
Where does the Gibbs phenomenon occurs?
Gibbs' phenomenon occurs near a jump discontinuity in the signal. It says that no matter how many terms you include in your Fourier series there will always be an error in the form of an overshoot near the disconti nuity. The overshoot always be about 9% of the size of the jump.
