How do you mic a drummer?
Put the mic between 1″–3″ off the outer head. Placing a boundary mic on a pillow inside the kick is the simplest option if you have a hole in the resonant head. It keeps the bleed from other drums and cymbals to a minimum and will give you lots of impact.
What can I use to mic drums?
The Dynamic Microphone
Cardioid pattern dynamic microphones are especially useful because they are specially designed to avoid drum sounds that come from behind it. They focus more on sound coming from beneath it. Drummers tend to use these on the snare and kick drum.
How do you mic drums for home recording?
Most home recorders will place a single boundary microphone about three inches away from the drum's outer head. If there is a circular cut-out in the outer head, you can also place a microphone inside the drum. This will block audio bleed from the other drums in your kit. If you have enough mics available, do both.
