How can spectral resolution be improved?
Spectral resolution and measurement dynamic range are the two most important parameters of an OSA, and both of them depend on the grating transfer function. These parameters can be improved by (1) increasing groove-line density of the grating and (2) increasing the size of the beam that launches onto the grating.
What determines spectral resolution?
Spectral resolution is determined by the width of each band in a wavelength. The more bands in an image, the more complex the color will be.
What is higher spectral resolution?
Spectral resolution describes the amount of spectral detail in a band. High spectral resolution means its bands are more narrow. Whereas low spectral resolution has broader bands covering more of the spectrum. For example, a multispectral image breaks light into 4 to 36 bands.

Using a grating with a high groove density may increase resolution, but the spectral range narrows. The dispersion of a grating changes inversely with the groove density. If the groove density is halved, the dispersion is doubled.
