Is a bilateral filter separable?
The separable implementation offers equivalent adaptive filtering capability at a fraction of execution time compared to the traditional filter. Because of this efficiency, the separable bilateral filter can be used for fast preprocessing of images and videos.
How does bilateral filtering work?
2.2 The bilateral filter smooths an input image while preserving its edges. Each pixel is replaced by a weighted average of its neighbors. Each neighbor is weighted by a spatial component that penalizes distant pixels and range component that penalizes pixels with a different intensity.
Is bilateral filter a Gaussian filter?
The bilateral filter is almost like a Gaussian filter, except that the Gaussian is modulated by a function that computes the similarity between the central pixel (where the filter is applied) and a pixel in its neighborhood (that is used in blurring).
