How do you calculate phase and gain margin?

The phase margin is the number of degrees by which the phase angle is smaller than −180° at the gain crossover. The gain crossover is the frequency at which the open-loop gain first reaches the value 1 and so is 0.005 Hz. Thus, the phase margin is 180° − 120° = 60°.

What is meant by phase margin and gain margin of system?

I. Gain margin is a factor by which the system gain can be increased to drive the system to the verse of instability. II. Phase margin is the additional phase lag at the gain cross over frequency to bring the system to verge of instability.

How do you calculate phase margin?

We define phase margin (PM) as the amount by which the phase at the crossover frequency ωc differs from 180∘mod360∘. To find PM, we need to inspect ϕ at ω=ωc. In Example 1, at crossover frequency ωc≈0.92, phase ϕ=−148∘. Therefore, phase margin is (−148∘)−(−180∘)=32∘.

What does phase margin tell you?

Phase margin indicates relative stability, the tendency to oscillate during its damped response to an input change such as a step function. Gain margin indicates absolute stability and the degree to which the system will oscillate, without limit, given any disturbance.
