Phon. A unit used to describe the LOUDNESS LEVEL of a given sound or noise. The system is based on EQUAL LOUDNESS CONTOURS, where 0 phons at 1,000 Hz is set at 0 decibels, the THRESHOLD OF HEARING at that frequency (see graph). The hearing threshold of 0 phons then lies along the lowest equal loudness contour.

How do Phons relate to decibels?
Cell phone signal strength is measured in decibels. Usually, -50 dB represents great signal (full bars) and -110 dB is virtually no signal (dead zone). This is true across all carriers and all phones.
Is phon Si unit of loudness?
phon is the unit of loudness level. The unit phon is used to indicate an individual's perception of loudness. By definition, 1 phon is equivalent to 1 deciBel at 1000 Hz (1 kHz).
How is loudness related to sound?
The closer the particles get or the further apart they get, the greater the sound's amplitude. Sound amplitude causes a sound's loudness and intensity. The bigger the amplitude is, the louder and more intense the sound.
What is difference between a deciBel dB and a phon?
The decibel scale measures the loudness of sound; the phon scale measures a person's perceptions.
