What is 16 bit depth?

Bit Depth is a metric of how many unique colors are in the color palette of an image that are used to represent each of the colors. This is not to say that the image will make use of all the colors in the palette, but they can be used to specify necessary colors with a certain level of precision.

Does bit depth matter?

The higher the bit depth, the more data will be captured to more accurately re-create the sound. If the bit depth is too low, information will be lost, and the reproduced sample will be degraded. For perspective, each sample recorded at 16-bit resolution can contain any one of 65,536 unique values (216).

What is bit depth in video?

Bit depth is the number of basic red, green and blue colors that can be stored in a frame of video. Each channel can display a variety of shades of the appropriate color. The number of shades determines the bit depth of the image.
