What is functional analysis in engineering?
Functional analysis is the next step in the Systems Engineering process after setting goal and requirements. Functional analysis divides a system into smaller parts, called functional elements, which describe what we want each part to do. We do not include the how of the design or solution yet.

Feature extraction, such as image understanding and speech recognition. Quality improvement, such as noise reduction, image enhancement, and echo cancellation.

Functional analysis takes us beyond finite matrices, allowing us to work with infinite sets of continuous functions. It resolves important issues, such as whether, why and how we can practically reduce such problems to finite matrix approximations.
