Autotune is a piece of software that adjusts notes that a person sings (or that an instrument plays) to fit into the scale of a song, essentially correcting the notes to fit the song. So if you have a song in the key of C major, you can adjust the singer's notes to match only the notes in C major.

Auto-Tune uses a proprietary device to measure and alter pitch in vocal and instrumental music recording and performances. Auto-Tune was originally intended to disguise or correct off-key inaccuracies, allowing vocal tracks to be perfectly tuned despite originally being slightly off-pitch.
Why do singers use autotune?
Autotuning can make vocals sound more pleasant to listen to. It can correct errors in timing, pitch, and volume that occur naturally when singing. Musicians who may not have a great singing voice use pitch correction to sound better than they would without it. This is generally seen as an advantage.
