Direct form 1 vs direct form 2

Direct form 1 vs direct form 2
  1. What is the difference between direct form 1 and direct form 2?
  2. Why is direct form 2 realization better than 1?
  3. What is direct Form 1?
  4. What is direct form II?

What is the difference between direct form 1 and direct form 2?

In very general terms, Direct Form I has advantages for fixed point implementations, and Direct Form II has advantages for floating point implementations. Both have stability problems for higher order filters. Both are equivalent for nonrecursive filters.

Why is direct form 2 realization better than 1?

The advantage of the direct form-II realization of continuous-time systems is that it uses minimum number of integrators. In this realization structure, an intermediate variable is integrated, instead of using the separate integrators for integrating the input and output variables separately.

What is direct Form 1?

In the direct form-I realization of a continuous time system, the differential equation or transfer function describing the system is directly implemented using the separate integrators for the input and output variables. Hence, for realising the system using direct form-I, more number of integrators are required.

What is direct form II?

In general, a direct form realization refers to a structure where the coefficients of the transfer function appear directly as Gain blocks. The direct form II realization method is presented as using the minimal number of delay elements, which is equal to n, the order of the transfer function denominator.
