What is beamforming in LTE?
Modern communications networks use MIMO technology to achieve high data rates. As a special MIMO technique, beamforming also permits targeted illumination of specific areas, making it possible to improve transmission to users at the far reaches of cell coverage.
What are layers in MIMO?
Single-user MIMO (SU-MIMO) is the ability to transmit one or multiple data streams, called layers, from one transmitting array to a single user. SU-MIMO can thereby increase the throughput for that user and increase the capacity of the network.
Why do we need beamforming?
Beamforming can help massive MIMO arrays, which are base stations arrayed with dozens or hundreds of individual antennas, to make more efficient use of the spectrum around them. The primary challenge for massive MIMO is to reduce interference while transmitting more information from many more antennas at once.
