How is point cloud data collected?
Point cloud scanning is the process of using a 3D laser scanner to capture different points, measuring an area. You can quickly generate a point cloud with mobile mapping devices to capture dimensions, size and layout data.
How are point clouds represented?
Point clouds are datasets that represent objects or space. These points represent the X, Y, and Z geometric coordinates of a single point on an underlying sampled surface. Point clouds are a means of collating a large number of single spatial measurements into a dataset that can then represent a whole.
When should I use point cloud?
As the output of 3D scanning processes, point clouds are used for many purposes, including to create 3D computer-aided design (CAD) models for manufactured parts, for metrology and quality inspection, and for a multitude of visualizing, animating, rendering, and mass customization applications.
