Detection of sharp peaks in an audio signal
  1. What is peak detection?
  2. What is onset detection?

What is peak detection?

Definition: Peak detector circuits are used to determine the peak (maximum) value of an input signal. It stores the peak value of input voltages for infinite time duration until it comes to reset condition.

What is onset detection?

Onset detection is concerned with finding the start of a musical note immediately preceding the attack. Onset detection in conjunction with pitch detection are utilized in various processes such as pitch-shifting, synthesis, adaptive filtering and envelope generation, to name a few.
