What is detecting sound?
Ears. We can detect sound using our ears. An ear has an eardrum inside, connected to three small bones. The vibrations in the air make the eardrum vibrate, and these vibrations are passed through the three small bones (called ossicles) to a spiral structure called the cochlea.
What device can detect sound?
The most common mechanical detector of sound is the microphone. It has a membrane that is made to vibrate by the sound. That vibration is changed to electrical signals, which are then sent to a processor or electronic circuitry for amplification or such.
Can we detect sound waves?
Sound waves are invisible to our eyes; unless we find a way to make the sound waves move something that we can see. In this activity, your child will use different noise-making objects to cause sound waves and make sand visibly move.
