Complex Samples (IQ) - Baseband Filtering

Complex Samples (IQ) - Baseband Filtering
  1. What is baseband IQ?
  2. Why baseband signal is complex?
  3. What is baseband signal and carrier signal?

What is baseband IQ?

A simple answer is that I/Q are the real and imaginary components of the complex-valued transmitted baseband signal. In communication systems "I/Q data" usually refers to the real (I) and imaginary (Q) samples of the constellation for the modulation type used.

Why baseband signal is complex?

Complex baseband representation of a modulated signal

Comparing equations (1) and (2), it is evident that in the complex baseband equivalent representation, the carrier frequency is suppressed. This greatly reduces both the sampling frequency requirements and the memory needed for simulating the model.

What is baseband signal and carrier signal?

1. Original (“baseband”) information signal - frequency is too low to transmit efficiently. 2. Higher frequency (“carrier”) signal - we can transmit this efficiently, so we use it to carry our information.
