What information can be provided by moment magnitude scale?

In particular, for very large earthquakes, moment magnitude gives the most reliable estimate of earthquake size. Moment is a physical quantity proportional to the slip on the fault multiplied by the area of the fault surface that slips; it is related to the total energy released in the earthquake.

What data is used to determine magnitude?

Magnitude measures the amount of seismic energy released at the source - or hypocenter - of an earthquake. An earthquake has only one magnitude determined from measurements on seismographs. The first widely-used measurement was the Richter scale.

How much more powerful is magnitude?

While each whole number increase in magnitude represents a tenfold increase in the measured amplitude, it represents an 32 times more energy release.

What is the difference between magnitude and intensity?

Magnitude is a measure of earthquake size and remains unchanged with distance from the earthquake. Intensity, however, describes the degree of shaking caused by an earthquake at a given place and decreases with distance from the earthquake epicentre.
