An analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is used to convert an analog signal such as voltage to a digital form so that it can be read and processed by a microcontroller.

Analog-to-Digital converters (ADC) translate analog signals, real world signals like temperature, pressure, voltage, current, distance, or light intensity, into a digital representation of that signal. This digital representation can then be processed, manipulated, computed, transmitted or stored.
What is ADC and DAC converter?
As its name implies, an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) takes an analog wave as an input and converts this wave to a digitally represented output form (Fig. 1). A digital-to-analog converter (DAC) essentially does the reverse, converting a digital representation into an analog form (Fig. 2).
