In electronic signal processing, a square law detector is a device that produces an output proportional to the square of some input.
Why detector is required to have a square law response?
The square law detector circuit is used for detecting modulated signal of small magnitude so that the operating region may be restricted to the non-linear portion of the V-I Characteristics of the device.
Why do we use square law modulator?
Square law diode modulation makes use of non-linear current-voltage characteristics of diode. This method is suited for low voltage levels as the current-voltage characteristic of diode is highly non- linear in the low voltage region. So the diode is biased to operate in this non-linear region for this application.
What are the advantages of practical diode detector?
Low cost: The diode detector only requires the use of a few low cost components. This made it ideal for use in transistor (and valve / vacuum tube ) radios using discrete components. Simplicity: Using very few components, the Diode AM detector was easy to implement. It was reliable and did not require any setup.
