What is non uniform quantization?

The type of quantization in which the quantization levels are unequal and mostly the relation between them is logarithmic, is termed as a Non-uniform Quantization.

How is non uniform quantization achieved?

Non uniform quantization is achieved by uniformly quantizing the "compressed" signal. At the receiver, an inverse compression characteristic, called "expansion" is employed to avoid signal distortion. It is implemented to improve the signal to quantization noise ratio of weak signals.

Where is non uniform quantization used?

a non-uniform quantizer can be designed so that the quantization levels are spaced more closely for smaller amplitudes and spaced more far apart for larger amplitudes. as a result the signal-to-noise ratio can be made constant for both small signals and for large signals.

What is the main difference between uniform and non uniform Quantising?

4.4.

While a uniform quantizer has the same step size throughout the input range, a nonuniform quantizer does not. For a uniform quantizer, the range and the step size determine the number of levels required for the quantization.
