A law companding

A-law is a standard compression algorithm used for audio processing in digital telecommunication. This companding algorithm is used in Europe to optimize the dynamic range of an analog signal before digitizing it. A-law is one of the two standard G. 711 versions.

What is A-law and μ-law companding?

The μ-law and A-law companding standards employ logarithm based functions to encode audio samples for ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) digital telephony services by means of non-linear quantization.

What are the two laws of companding?

In companding, quantization intervals increase logarithmically with an increase in the amplitude of the signal. Two such logarithmic companding curves are A-law curve and µ-law curve, which differ in the slope at their origins, as shown in Figure 1.

What is the use of companding?

Companding is used in digital telephony systems, compressing before input to an analog-to-digital converter, and then expanding after a digital-to-analog converter. This is equivalent to using a non-linear ADC as in a T-carrier telephone system that implements A-law or μ-law companding.

What is companding types of companding?

The word Companding is a combination of Compressing and Expanding, which means that it does both. This is a non-linear technique used in PCM which compresses the data at the transmitter and expands the same data at the receiver. The effects of noise and crosstalk are reduced by using this technique.
