3 pin plug explained

Three-pin plug and socket In a three-pin plug, the top pin is for earthing, the pin on left is for live and the pin on the right is for neutral. In a socket, the upper big hole is for earthing, the hole on the right is for the live wire connection and the hole on the left is for the neutral wire connection.

How does a 3 pin plug work?

3 pin plugs are designed so that mains electricity can be supplied to electrical appliances safely. A 3 pin plug consists of three pins (hence the name). Each pin must be correctly connected to the three wires in the electrical cable. Each wire has its own specified colour so as it can be easily identified.

What are the 3 wires in a pin plug?

The green/yellow wire links to the Earth terminal in the middle at the top. Looking from the top, the blue wire goes on the left (the pin marked with a blue dot or the letter ā€œNā€), and the brown goes on the right (The pin marked with a brown dot or the letter ā€œLā€).

What do the different Colours represent in a 3 pin plug?

The protective ground is green or green with yellow stripe. The neutral is white, the hot (live or active) single phase wires are black , and red in the case of a second active.
