What is the purpose of phase difference?

What is Phase Difference? Considering the sinusoidal waveform, the phase difference is explained as the time gap where the wave either falls behind or leads in correspondence to another wave. This term is just a characteristic of a single wave and it is the relative characteristic of either two or more waves.

What is importance of phase in signal?

Abstract: In the Fourier representation of signals, spectral magnitude and phase tend to play different roles and in some situations many of the important features of a signal are preserved if only the phase is retained.

Why is phase more important than magnitude?

So you can see that the phase information is most important. Changing the magnitude of the various component sinusoids changes the shape of the feature. When you do a phase-only reconstruction, you set all the magnitudes to one, which changes the shape of the features, but not their location.

What information do we get from magnitude and phase representation?

The magnitude tells you the strength of the frequency components relative to other components. The phase tells you how all the frequency components align in time. Plot the magnitude and the phase components of the frequency spectrum of the signal.
